ASWAMA cautions against disposing wastes in drainage channels

Managing Director, Anambra State Waste Management Authority (ASWAMA), Mr Amechi Akorah has called on Ndi Anambra to desist from disposing wastes in drainage channels.Wastes clog drainage channels, thereby restricting free flow of water,’’ Mr Akorah, said this while exchanging views with newsmen in Awka.He noted that blocking of drainages obstruct free flow of rain waters, saying that it can lead to disasters.

It is important that we understand that the rainy season is here and there is a need for drainage channels to be free in order to avoid flood disasters. It is disheartening that some people still dump refuse in drainages in spite of the efforts of the government toward maintenance of a clean environment. We should take care of channels around our residences and ensure they are not blocked.’’

The ASWAMA Chief Executive explained that people should bag their wastes and dispose only at designated points for onward evacuation by the agency. He said that the agency had maintained prompt evacuation of wastes on a daily basis in order to achieve a sustainable clean and healthy environment.Maintenance of a clean environment is a collective responsibility. Environment we neglect today will take revenge on us tomorrow.
