Anambra State Government says it is set to strengthen working relationships with National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to improve welfare of Corps members serving in the state.In addition, the government will tackle challenges militating against smooth operations of the body to enable it to function optimally.
Commissioner for Youth Empowerment and Creative Economy, Prof. Theresa Obiekezie, said this while receiving a delegation from NYSC led by its State Coordinator, Mr Kehinde Aremu, on a familiarisation visit to her office.
Prof. Obiekezie said that the state government would address contentious issues raised by the agency which pertained to welfare, posting of Corps members to public and private schools as well as infrastructure challenges.She noted that existing synergy with the agency would be sustained and improved to realise set objectives for youth training and development, stressing that the government placed a high premium on youth related matters.
The commissioner enjoined Corpers serving in the state to maximize training and empowerment opportunities created for them at various stages of their service years to impact on their lives and society.While describing NYSC scheme as an exciting programme that needed to be experienced, she called on Corps members to imbibe the virtues derivable from the scheme in order to build a better society.
The state NYSC coordinator, Mr Aremu thanked the government for provision of infrastructure and support services to the agency, especially the completion of its Permanent Orientation Camp at Umuawulu.He, however, appealed to the government to expedite action on landscaping the facility and redemption of its pledge to provide a truck to tackle problems of logistics.
Mr Aremu described his relationship with the Ministry as cordial and announced that the commissioner had been made the new Chairman, NYSC Governing Board in the state.Present during the visit include the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mrs Louisa Ezeanya; Director-General, Digital Entrepreneurship Office, Mr Ifeanyi Aniagoh and other senior officers of NYSC.
