Anambra State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Mr C Don Adinuba has appealed to the media to celebrate only authentic heroes and not villains.Let’s strive to celebrate only achievers and those positively touching lives in the society,’’ Mr Adinuba made the appeal, while being interviewed by some members of the media.
The commissioner, who had the interaction at his office at the Jerome Udoji Secretariat, Awka, noted that for reasons, a section of the media sometimes choose to celebrate some villains, portraying such people as heroes. This is not good enough, as it can send wrong signals and invariably promote people, who ought to be treated with disdain.
It a failure on the part of the Nigerian media, if they fail to take steps that will help them to wipe out social ills by selecting to celebrate heroes rather than villains; because sometimes they make superheroes out of people with wrong values. This is largely responsible for collapse of right values in the larger Nigerian society; this constitutes a huge problem.’’
According to him, over the next couple of days, the Anambra State Government will celebrate the two individuals, who placed first and second in the 2020 Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination. The two – Agnes Maduafokwa, a female from Ihiala, Ihiala Local Government Area (LGA) and David Nwobi, a male from Nawfia in Njikoka LGA, both of Anambra State.
Mr Adinuba, then, mentioned a few individuals of remarkable character in the country, who were worth celebrating including the Anambra indigene that had just been appointed as a Vice-Chancellor of Leeds Trinity University, U.K.This is a first Nigerian, to be so appointed to such an exalted position in the U.K.
We insist on celebrating these people in order to uphold authentic values; such values are like blood in the veins of the society; if you don’t have the right values that society cannot progress.’’The commissioner, then, alluded to role models worth celebrating include a top Nigerian in the mold of Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, a hero that led Nigeria to independence from Great Britain in1960.
Worth mentioning according to Mr Adinuba, is the fact the Anambra Governor has been pushing for a National Holiday in honour of this great man, Dr Azikiwe, who inspired many great men and women we have in the country today.
