Anambra State Waste Management Authority (ASWAMA), in collaboration with Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (OCHA Brigade) has embarked on sensitisation of the public on proper waste disposal.This has become necessary since the attitude of dumping wastes on the road is on the increase; it is unacceptable and must be stopped.’’
Head of Enforcement ASWAMA, Mr Raymond Nwasolum, said this during the exercise in Awka.Mr Nwasolum explained that the exercise would last for some time, saying that people were expected to bag their wastes and dispose of them only at designated points for evacuation by the agency.He said that they had made several announcements on implications of disposing of wastes on roads, stressing that those that indulge in the act would be arrested and prosecuted.
When we wanted to keep waste bins in various locations, we consulted community leaders and they selected these designated points for waste bins to enable their people to dispose of wastes with ease.It is regrettable that some people still dump wastes on the road and these wastes distort the beauty of our roads. This act also endangers the health of the masses.
We should know that these wastes on the road eventually end up in drainage channels and cause flood disasters.’’A staff member of OCHA Brigade, Mr Simba Ugwu decried the poor attitude of people at maintaining a clean environment, saying that everyone should join hands to protect the environment.Mr Ugwu enjoined the citizenry to desist from indiscriminate waste disposal in order to achieve sustainable clean and healthy environment
